Liberal schools look for person to help students from Myanmar
A different culture, and a different way of communicating, has a southwest Kansas school district looking for a new hire.
The Liberal school district is looking for someone to help about 35 students from the southeast Asian nation of Myanmar.
The district's school board approved creating a new para-professional position in teaching English as a Second Language. The district's Director of Federal Programs, Laura Cano, says finding someone qualified and willing is difficult, but the position is badly needed.
"What we are finding is that a lot of the parents have limited English skills, so we can't even communicate with the parents, so there is definitely a barrier between our families, our students and our teachers," said Cano.
Cano says there are also cultural issues they must face. That includes students that do not understand they must attend class every day.
