Craft Shows
Lawrence, Kansas is a city with a unique history and culture. Founded in 1854 by the New England Emigrant Aid Society, Lawrence is said to be the only city in America founded for political reasons. That distinctiveness is still present in the city today with it's open minded and highly creative culture. It is considered one of the best small arts towns in America and has a number of popular craft shows and bazaars to prove it.
Annual Arts and Crafts Bazaar
This show is an annual event held each year to prepare for and offer goods for the holidays. Admission to the bazaar is free to everyone. Vendors sell homemade crafts and holiday items. Gift baskets, Christmas wreaths, paintings, table settings, knitted scarves, hats and gloves all make an appearance at the bazaar. Food vendors occasionally set up to sell fair food and home baked goods such as, candy, fudge and cookies. Vendors must call ahead and pay a fee to set up.
Annual Art in the Park
Artists display their artwork outdoors in the beautiful setting of South Park. The event is open to people of all ages for free and includes live music and special activities for children. The Art tent is a special area set up for children's activities including face painting and coloring. Artists set up booths and tables to display watercolor, oil and acrylic paintings, sculptures, ceramics and mixed media work. Artists sign up in advance and pay a small fee to get a spot.
Haskell Indian Art Market
The Haskell Indian Nations University hosts this annual market to display two-dimensional and three-dimensional native artwork by students and local artists. Indian blankets, woven baskets and pottery are displayed next to paintings and jewelry with a Native American or Western theme. The market is free to visitors with a small fee for those who wish to set up. Visitors can also enjoy live demonstrations, entertainment and food. Demonstrations have included traditional Native American dances, drum circles and lessons in beading, weaving and even leather work.
